Suffolk Names Finalists to Compete for $50k New Product Innovation Challenge

Suffolk University’s Sawyer Business School has just selected the finalists for their fifth annual New Product Innovation Challenge. the competition urges students to think outside the box while fostering the development of leadership skills and the ability to communicate a compelling vision.

The competition saw 326 entries this year, a long way from the 27 it saw just five years ago. Also new this year, the entire Suffolk community was invited to apply – the Sawyer Business School, College of Arts and Sciences, and Law School – previously it was only open to Sawyer Business School.

“Through our curriculum and various events, such as the New Product Innovation Competition, we’re providing people with new ways of thinking and innovative new approaches to product development and services,” said Sawyer Business School Executive-in-Residence Sushil Bhatia, who originated the competition.

The winners will be announced on September 30th 2011.

This is an application for a vehicle’s navigation system that stores data for sales people about their client’s contact info, sales numbers, products, meeting location directions, etc.

Product Name: Matchless Hitch Extension – Innovator Name: Paul Tortorici, MBA ‘10

The product will allow consumers the ability to attach a bike rack, ski rack, etc. to a trailer hitch without worrying about an auxiliary tire or any other type of apparatus

Product Name: still Grips – Innovator Name: Anthony Bababekov, BSBA ‘07

Still Grips is a special unique environmentally friendly adhesive that sticks right on to the sole of your sneaker or shoe.

Product Name: Celebrate – Innovator Name: Patrick Crowley, DIP ‘74

Celebrate Their Life Funeral Templates are preprinted, full color, high quality funeral template background sheets that depict a person’s lifestyle like golfing, waterfalls, candles etc. that you combine with a denomination template of your choice that’s supplied on a CD, such as Catholic, Baptist etc. the CD automatically downloads to your computer. A cookware set designed to reduce household energy consumption and address common discomforts involved with preparing a meal. these pots and pans will be integrated allowing individuals to cook 2-3 different foods at different temperatures in the same pan using only burner.

Product Name: LOL Switch – Innovator Name: Kristen Vadala

The product is a light. a light programmed on a timing device which enables it to turn on or off as slowly or as fast as preferred beginning and ending at a pre-set brightness level ranging from 1-10.

Product Name: Envopaper – Innovator Name: Mara Dreiser

EnvoPaper is an eco-friendly wallpaper that is made up of two primary substances; previously used and recycled paper (cardboard, newspapers, office paper, phonebooks) that is de-copied with a Nano DeCopier PaperPulper from JMD Mfg., inc. that turns into paper pulp; and wood pulp that comes from America’s and Canada’s sustainable forests. it has a milk-based paint that is 100% natural and eco-friendly that is used for dying and designing. EnvoPaper also consists of a specialty flour and water-soluble based adhesive that is non-toxic, non allergenic, omits the use of chemicals, vinyl based glues, fungicides, preservatives, acrylic and solvents.

Recyclable screw on plastic bottle cap that remains attached to the bottle via a strip of plastic that is attached both to the cap and neck.

Product Name: Spynergy – Innovator Name: Jessie Schloss, MBA ‘11

Products and services to retrofit fitness centers in order to harness and utilize the kinetic energy of their spinning classes.

Product Name: Laundry plus – Innovator Name: Maria Alarcon, BSBA ‘11

The product consists in renting small washer machines on an hourly base. the washer machine would be delivered to the customer’s house and then pick it up when the person is done doing the laundry. This would be a small and light washer machine, easy to move from place to place. it will not need to have water connection because it can be filled manually. there will be two versions of this machine, one powered by an electric connection and a second one that will be powered by a battery.

The eTruck is basically a mobile Internet unit used to improve the learning and the education of people living in rural areas in India.

Product Name: the Mobile Clinic – Innovator name: Mohammad Alsaleh

Mobile clinic that includes mobile versions of a defibrillator, vital signs monitor, EKG/ECG, Ultrasound unit and a printer. the unit will have storage space to store other medical supplies.

Product Name: PlaquePac! – Innovator Name: Alicia Haglund, MSA ‘11

A low-cost dental care package, including floss and a fluoride gel, made from natural, sustainable materials to improve the dental health of the millions of people living in the markets at the bottom of the economic pyramid.

Product Name: Nutri-bar – Innovator Name: Michael Pinciaro, MBA online student

The product is a series of nutrition bars that target the vitamin deficiencies in the BOP market. the first, and primary, offering is a bar for pregnant women. the product line will continue with a series for children that provides the nutrition they need as they grow.

Product Name: Factorization of Agriculture – Innovator Name: Vibha Singh

It is an idea of giving agriculture form of a factory which would be owned by an individual or a group of individuals and provide work to farmers. This will increase productivity and also add value to agriculture as a profession

Product Name: Beantown Vault – Innovator Name: Natalie Breen

A touch screen kiosk is stationed in high traffic tourist areas in Boston with the intention of simplifying the process of being a tourist by highlighting attractions based on personal preferences learned through a simple survey process considering a variety of demographics relating to the user.

Product Name:  WhisKlean – Innovator Name: Wes McMahon

A small plastic and rubber cylinder which is open on the top and bottom which is filled top to bottom with stainless steel bristles. a whisk can be inserted into either end and swirled around, quickly and easily removing any stuck on food.

This is a switch that goes on your wall next to your light switch that can turn off all electronics in the room that you would like off over night.

Product Name: Bruce Investment Fund – Innovator Name: Cesar Faucheur, BSBA student

This is an investment fund that offers a service for children and grandchildren from high-net worth family to learn how to invest and manage their money. I realized that most of private banks and family offices or wealth management companies do not offer this type of service. So it could be a good “niche” business and a lot of my relatives are in the money management business. the demand is also high from children or grandchildren of high-net worth families to participate more in the management of their family’s assets in a fund that is only dedicated to them.

A smartphone that is specifically designed for the visually impaired. This product incorporates much of today’s technologies into one mobile device.

Product Name: Tactograph LOL – Innovator Name: Sonia Garcia, BSBA student

TactoGraph is a talking and tactile graphing calculator for visually impaired and blind individuals. Imputed equations are repeated audibly while a tactile graph appears on the screen.
