FDA Investigates Newer Birth Control Pills

June 2, 2011 — The FDA has issued a safety alert warning that women taking a newer type of birth control pill containing the progestin hormone drospirenone may be at higher risk for developing potentially deadly blood clots than women taking pills with an older type of progestin hormone. 

Pills containing drospirenone include Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceutical’s Beyaz, Safyral, Yasmin, and Yaz brands, as well as several other brands (Gianvi, Loryna, Ocella, Syeda, and Zarah).

The FDA says in a statement that its decision to investigate the birth control pills was based on two newly published studies.

Some Warfarin Tablets Recalled

Drugmaker Bristol-Myers Squibb has initiated a voluntary recall of a single lot of 5 mg tablets of warfarin sodium (Coumadin) because the tablets have been found to have a higher potency than expected. The lot number of warfarin affected by the recall is 9H49374A, with an expiration date of Sept. 30, 2012. Officials at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommend that patients in possession of these warfarin tablets should not stop taking them, but should consult their pharmacist. If the tablets are from the affected lot, patients are advised to consult their physician immediately.
